When you add a domain as hosted in some account, you usually set a pair of Name Servers to direct it to that specific service provider. On their end, three records are created automatically the moment the domain name is added - one A record and two MX records. The former is a numeric address, or IP address, which “tells” the domain where its website is, while the other two are alphanumeric and they indicate the server that manages the e-mails for that specific domain. The site and the email hosting are usually perceived as one thing, while they're actually two different services. Having independent records for them will permit you to have them with different companies if you wish. As an illustration, some new service provider may have excellent uptime for your website, but you may not want to switch your e-mail messages from your current host and by using an A record to point the domain name to the first and MX records to have the e-mails with the second, you can get the best of both companies. These records are checked whenever you want to open a site or send an email - either way, the company whose name servers are used for the domain address will be contacted to retrieve the A and MX records and if you have set records different from their own, the right web/mail server will then be contacted and you'll see the needed website or your email is going to be delivered.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Web Hosting

If you have a shared web hosting account with our company and you want to switch either your website or your e-mails to an alternative service provider, it is going to take you literally only two clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP offers an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the standard two, it is not going to take more than a few clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a particular MX record is going to have. The propagation of every record that you change or create won't take more than a few hours and if needed, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which shows how long a record will stay active after it is changed or deleted.
